Oggi il nostro almanacco ricorda che nel 1929 Babe Ruth spedisce fuori dal Cleveland League Park un lancio di Wilson Hudin: è il suo homerun n. 500.
Ma c’è un’altra curiosità, spiegata nel libro di Bill Jenkinson dal titolo The Year Babe hit 104 HR: l’esatto conteggio dei fuoricampo battuti da Babe Ruth nel 1927 dovrebbe essere – secondo la ricerca dell’autore – 104 e non 60 perchè quell’anno vigeva la regola ( oltre a quella che era considerata homerun un palla rimbalzante oltre al muro che oggi sarebbe un doppio di regola, circostanza che certamente regalò alcuni homeruns a Babe) che per essere considerata homerun una palla battuta oltre il muro di fondo in fair territory, cioè tra i due pali di foul , dovesse anche atterrare in fair territory cioè nelle porzione di fuoricampo ricompresa tra i due pali di foul! Tolti i doppi diventati homeruns e aggiunti gli homeruns non concessi perchè la palla non era caduta nell’area esterna ricompresa tra i pali di foul, ne risulta un saldo attivo che eleva a 104 gli homeruns stagionali di Babe Ruth!
